The string chamber music program is directed by members of the Kairos Quartet, which is the resident ensemble of Central Washington University. In the Chamber Music Seminar the Kairos Quartet combines coachings and master classes to maximize student learning.

Gestalt Quartet continues to final round of the Music Teachers National Association Competition.
Atropos Quartet, "The Sirens" Quartet and Gryphon Quartet are actively performing on-campus and doing outreach in the Ellensburg community.
Abraxas Quartet performed in final round of the national Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.
Piano Chamber Music Class
Taught by piano professor Dr. John Pickett, this course allows string players to explore the vast sonata and piano&string chamber music repertoire with accomplished student pianists. The class is usually taught in masterclass format.
Classics in Ellensburg Series
Professor Rehkopf organizes a series of concert events designed to attract audiences that would otherwise not attend classical music concerts. The First Friday Brown Bag Concerts affords numerous opportunities for student performances. first year performances

Bi-weekly string studio classes give students repeated chances to perform for each other, and receive positive feedback and constructive comments.
Convocation/Recital Hour
On alternate weeks, the entire student body of the music department gathers in Hertz Auditorium to listen to student performances. Performing for several hundred of your peers is an excellent opportunity.
String Studio Recitals
Each quarter the string studio presents a concert featuring polished performances by individual string students and chamber ensembles.Recitals
In addition to required Junior and Senior Recitals, students are encouraged to present additional joint or solo recitals.
Studio Projects
Each quarter, string students are encouraged to give a performance presentation outside of the music department. This project helps students develop verbal communication skills, offer community service and practice adapting to different types of audiences."This project was really profitable to me by opening my eyes to some of the service opportunities that surround me."

Many continuing string students have utilized this full-tuition, project supporting scholarship grant to present a variety of concert performances--pure improvisation, Baroque dance music, Beethoven Violin Sonatas and Hungarian gypsy music. After their first year, music students maintaining a 3.25 grade point are eligible to apply for a Farrell Merit Scholarship that covers project expenses, full-tuition and books. more info
Snelling Competition
An annual music department contest for prize money, sponsored by the Ellensburg Music Study Group.
Concerto/Aria Competition
Bi-annual music department contest where a half or dozen or so students win the opportunity to perform with the University Orchestra in concert.

Central string students have excelled, making their way to the national finals of the MTNA and ASTA Competitions.
Providing a focal point for orchestral music at CWU is the University Orchestra. Dr. Nik Caoile, director of orchestras, is committed to providing diverse programming for students, with experiences ranging from small ensembles to full symphonic instrumentation.
The University Orchestra has performed at the Washington Music Educators Association conference. Collaborations with the choral/voice program include the Brahms German Requiem, Mozart Requiem, Carmina Burana, Handel Messiah, Verdi Stabat Mater, as well as a full-scale production of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute. Participants include music majors as well as non-majors.

A chamber orchestra consisting of the most advanced players explores the repertoire for that genre.
