50 CELLI TAKE TO THE STAGE!
On November 2nd and 3rd, fifty of the finest cellists from across the state will converge upon Ellensburg to perform in the second Central Cello Celebration, hosted by the CWU Music Department. Representatives of the Seattle Symphony's cello section will be attending, including the new principal cellist Joshua Roman. They are slated to give solo performances and join the CCC cello choir in a rare performance of the Bachianas Brasilieras No.1. This extraordinary work by Villa Lobos, "Brazilian Bach-piece", combines Brazilian folk music characteristics with formal structures of European classical music. The outer movements are propelled by intense, driving syncopated rhythms, and the middle movement features a exquisite melody that soars over thick lush harmonies. Originally written for 8 cellos, it will be performed on the Finale Concert , November 3rd at 7pm in the Concert Hall. This concert will include performances of guest artists and music for the grand cello choir, when 50 cellists will take to the stage!
Other performances during this two-day celebration are scheduled for Thursday, November 2nd at 7pm and November 3rd at 3pm, both in the music building Recital Hall. The November 3rd afternoon concert will include performances by Joshua Roman and Roberta Downey. All performances are free.
